Building Better Players. Developing Stronger People.

Our basketball teams are built for more than just competition. At 4D Hoops, we create an environment where young athletes thrive—growing their basketball skill sets, developing character, and building a foundation for success on and off the court.

Who It’s For:

Boys & Girls | Grades 5th–8th

Whether your child is new to team play or ready to elevate their skill sets, our program gives athletes the tools they need to grow with confidence and without the pressure of year-round demands.

What Makes Our Teams Different

  • Player Development First: Every practice and game is built around skill development, confidence, and basketball IQ—not just winning.
  • Positionless Basketball: Players build skills at every position so they're not limited by size or role, preparing them for long-term success.
  • Motion Over Plays: Rather than teaching players to memorize a bunch of plays, we teach them how to play. By focusing on spacing, cutting, screening, and decision-making, players develop real instincts that transfer to the next level.
  • Man-to-Man Defensive Foundation: We exclusively teach man-to-man defense—no zones. This builds long-term defensive fundamentals that set players up for future success.
  • Multi-Sport Friendly: We support athletes who play other sports, helping them avoid burnout and stay balanced year-round.
  • Life Skills Integration: Athletes participate in our 4D Life Skills Program with weekly lessons, videos, and reflection activities that build leadership, emotional intelligence, and personal responsibility.
  • Smaller Teams, Bigger Impact: Teams are capped at nine players to ensure more playing time, personalized instruction, and meaningful growth for every athlete.

More Than a Team—A Holistic Approach to Player Growth

Our coaching is rooted in the 4D Philosophy, which develops every athlete across four essential dimensions: physical health, mental strength, emotional intelligence, and spiritual growth. On the court, this leads to stronger bodies, sharper minds, better decision-making, and athletes who lead with purpose and character. Off the court, it prepares young people to thrive in all areas of life, not just basketball.

How We Teach the Game

Defense: Man-to-Man Mastery

We teach man-to-man defense from grades 5th through 8th because it builds the foundation for high-level team play and long-term success. Our players don’t just guard a spot—they learn how to defend with purpose, communicate effectively, and work as a unit.

What We Teach:

  • Defensive Transition: Sprinting back, protecting the basket, slowing the ball down, and forming a wall.
  • On-Ball Defense: Applying pressure, closing out with control, and staying disciplined in stance.
  • Help-Side Awareness: Understanding spacing, positioning, and how to rotate and recover.
  • Communication: Teaching players to talk Early, Loud, and Often (ELO) to support their teammates and take ownership on the floor.
  • Finishing Possessions: Rebounding, diving for loose balls, and maintaining intensity through the whistle.

Why It Matters:

These principles produce tougher, smarter, and more connected defenders—exactly what high school coaches look for.

Offense: Positionless and Concept-Based

Rather than running set plays or scripted continuity offenses, we teach players how to play the game with confidence, awareness, and adaptability.

What We Teach:

  • Spacing and Floor Awareness: Understanding how to create space and open up opportunities
  • Player and Ball Movement: Making purposeful cuts and unselfish passes to keep defenses off balance
  • Reading the Defense: Learning when to attack, pass, or shoot based on defensive reactions
  • Layered Offensive Concepts: Cutting, temporary post-ups, penetrate and pitch, away screens, back screens, ball screens, and handoffs

Why It Matters:

Players develop versatility, decision-making, and offensive IQ, so that they can be effective in any system. By learning how to play instead of just running plays, they’ll be prepared to contribute right away in high school, no matter what offense their program uses.

Practice with Purpose

  • Focused Reps: We emphasize fundamentals and decision-making through small-sided games and drills.
  • Efficient Use of Time: Every session maximizes touches, teaching moments, and meaningful competition.
  • Integrated Learning: We combine skill work, offensive and defensive concepts through small-sided games and live-action drills, helping players apply what they learn in realistic, game-like situations.

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS? WE HAVE YOU!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does everyone who tries out make a team? How are teams structured?

Not everyone who attends tryouts will be invited to join the 4D Hoops program. Roster spots are limited based on available coaches and gym space, as we aim to provide a quality experience for every player and family. At most grade levels, we form multiple teams.

What’s the time commitment? Where are practices and games held?

Teams typically practice twice per week, with 90 minute practices held between 4:00–9:00 PM, Monday through Thursday.

Practices are held at Shawnee Mission Schools and Sylvester Powell Community Center. Teams usually play two weekends per month, with an occasional third weekend depending on the season. All games are played in local league or tournament formats within the Greater Kansas City area.

What’s the cost?

The cost is $210/month during the season. There is also a one-time gear fee of $165, which includes a uniform, practice jersey, shooting shirt, and bag. This fee may vary slightly from year to year depending on vendor pricing. Players do not need to purchase new gear each year if their current items still fit and are in good condition.

What if we need financial assistance?

We never want cost to be the reason a child can’t participate. If you need help, please reach out. We’ll work with your family to provide flexible solutions and financial assistance based on your situation.
